Subconscious Assistance

Close your eyes and imagine driving down the road and making a lane change, one lane to the right. Take your time and go through the actual motions.

Easily done, right?

If you are like most people you held the wheel straight, then turned it slightly right for a moment, and then straightened it back out. Simple.

The problem is, if you did the exercise the way most people do, you piloted a course right off the road onto the sidewalk!

The correct motion is banking slightly right and then back through the center to the left, the same distance you went right, and then finally straightening out.[i] If you don't believe it, go for a drive and test it.

Our minds have an autopilot much more suited for some tasks than the conscious mind.
